Summary
In partnership with the Circumarctic Rangifer Monitoring and Assessment (CARMA) network and northern wildlife agencies we are examining caribou brains for CWD. The obex is collected through the foramen magnum using a plastic spatula and then frozen until it can be examined by Canadian Food Inspection Agency in Lethbridge.
A single section of brain (Bathhurst herd n=13) or a single section of tonsil/lymph node and a single section of brain (Porcupine herd n=13) were stained with F99 antibody for prion protein. No evidence of Chronic Wasting Disease was detected.
