Internationally – how is CARMA contributing?

Caribou News

Internationally – how is CARMA contributing?

CARMA has contributed to a global initiative to create the first-ever global atlas of ungulate (hooved mammal) migrations including, of course, caribou and wild reindeer. The international team is partnered with the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. The atlas is to help governments, indigenous people and local communities, planners, and wildlife managers to identify current and future threats to migrations, and advance conservation measures to sustain them in the face of an expanding human footprint.

Also on the international scale, CARMA has worked during 2019 and 2020 with Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council) toward completing the State of the Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity Report (START Report).

CARMA 10 is coming Fall 2021!

“Monitoring into the Future”

logoDue to ongoing pandemic, CARMA organizers have decided to go virtual. CARMA will host a series of three 3-hour sessions under the theme Monitoring into the Future. The sessions will focus on:

Session 1: the expected and unexpected: Rangifer current status, trends and “surprises”.
Session 2: the latest in monitoring methodology
Session 3: involving people and making a difference.

Planning for the meeting is ongoing and we would welcome any suggestions for specific presentations under each session topic. Expect to receive updates on the program and registration details in the near future.

If you have specific topics you think would be important to highlight, please forward them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
