Summary

In partnership with CARMA, northern wildlife agencies, and independent researchers we are examining caribou feces for parasites. The purpose of this project is to describe the diversity, prevalence and intensity of parasites in feces of caribou from across Canada and Greenland. Results will be compared across age and sex classes and across herds.

Fecal analyses include double centrifugation sugar flotation, modified Baermann examination, and immunofluorescent antibody examination for Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Samples positive for Giardia will be examined further to determine Assemblage type. To date over 300 samples have been examined.
