Summary
Caribou Health Monitoring in Northern Canada from Hunter Harvested Caribou - Bluenose West September 2007 Collection
In order to monitor the health and body condition of caribou in the Sahtu region of the Northwest Territories, 20 caribou that were harvested by hunters were sampled during the fall 2007 community hunt at Horton Lake, Northwest Territories. Hunters from the communities of Colville Lake and Fort Good Hope allowed us to obtain samples from their animals.

Applications
The purpose of this project was to compile baseline data on age, body condition, and the parasite and disease status of caribou as part of a larger program within the CircumArctic Rangifer Monitoring and Assessment (CARMA) Network to study herds across the circumpolar region using the Rangifer Health & Body Condition monitoring protocols to ensure that the information is comparable to data collected in subsequent years and in different herds of caribou and reindeer in the circumpolar region.
