Summary

Project Title: Community-based caribou collections Caribou in northern Quebec 

The main objective of this project is to organize a community-based sampling collection of barren-ground caribou in both the George River and Leaf River herds in Northern Quebec in order to assess the general health status of this resource. In 2007 we have been working in collaboration with the Nunavik Research Center (NRC) in order to involve Inuit communities of the Nunavik in the health monitoring of migratory caribou. One of our goals is to better understand the role of the parasite Besnoitia in the health of the migratory caribou herds of Nunavik but also of other barren-ground caribou herds across Canada.

With the help of the NRC, our team organized spring training workshops in some of the Nunavik's communities. Hunters were selected from Inuit communities in proximity with the conventional migration routes used by both the Leaf River and the George River Herds. These hunters were asked to take measurements and samples from the harvested caribou.
